Mantequilla

We have been doing a unit study on Thanksgiving. So, we spent a couple of days learning about the customs of the early american settlers vs. our modern day conveniences. To illustrate the difference, our little "pilgrim" boy got to make butter in jar.

First you pour the cream in a jar, screw the lid on and start shaking...this is kinda' fun, right?

Then you KEEP shaking...and shaking...and shaking...til you almost fall over. :-)

You shake for a looong time, and you end up with something like this...There's real butter in there!

Drain off the milk, put it on a plate...
...and enjoy your hard work on a slice of homemade bread. All that work for boring ol' butter?? Yup. Aren't you glad yours comes in neatly wrapped quarters from the local supermarket?

There's a huge "gap" between your last picture and the link to comment. (Maybe something you want to edit and fix? This happens a lot when I post pics too.. it puts in extra spaces).

Anyway- That looks delicious. A lot of my homeschooling friends have been doing this lately.. with great results. I guess I should try it too!

re: hosting

I usually give the kids a movie to watch, or they nap. We still push naps around here (which usually falls around 2-3pm anyway) so it works out well. They dont HAVE to sleep, but they do have to be quiet in their rooms (either read or play in their beds)... and they usually end up falling asleep for a good hour- sometimes longer since they are very active and usually worn out by then.

No one minds if they hear a little baby chatter. It's part of the deal when you have children! One time I was giving a speech and the kids kept coming to me (it didn't fall during nap time).. but it still went over well. Everyone is very understanding because they all have children themselves. :) It's just life!
